After a relaxing drive in a very nice air-conditioned van, our guide almost had to push Beau and I out into the blistering heat to see the ruins.  Not that we didn't want to see the Amud El-Sawari ruins just that we were not ready for another day in the 104' degree heat. I am glad we made it out of the van. Amud El-Sawari is the site of Pompey's Pillar and two pink granite sphinxs.

Then we visited the roman amphitheater and enjoyed a little impromptu American Idol singing and dancing.  There is a round stone in the center of the amphitheater stage that has the best acoustics.  It was entertaining to see the tourist trying out their dance moves.  We skipped that part.

Alexandria also has a new addition to the city, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Library.  The library is very contemporary with historical abstractions.  You can see the references to Egyptian architecture throughout the building.  The Norwegian architect, Snohetta, won the contract for the building through a UNESCO design competition.

Our last stop of the day in Alexandria was the Citadel of Qaitbay.  This place seemed to be a hot spot for tourist and locals.  The locals were swimming at the point in the Mediterranean sea while tourist strolled around buying souvenirs.  It is also a great view point to look back at the city and see the mix of Roman, Greek and French architecture that makes up modern Alexandria.
