A World of Pedal Power

Now that we are approaching record prices at the pump and it’s starting to feel like spring, I thought I’d honor the world of pedal power.  Although there are people in the USA that depend on their bikes for transportation, on the most part bikes are more or less a novelty or used solely for recreation.  For many people around the world, a bicycle can be a lifeline.  Throughout our travels, we seem to gravitate towards taking bike photos, we’ve taken hundreds.  We’ll spare you from looking at all of them, but below is a bit of a photo essay of bicycles and other pedal powered vehicles from around the world.

If you have an extra bike laying around, you can donate it to truly change a life: World Bicycle Relief, Bicycles for Humanity & Bikes of the World.  (If anyone knows of more organizations/companies donating bikes, let us know and we’ll add them in this post.)Bicylces of the World | Ho Chi Minh City

Yeah spring and pedal power. Love it, especially the photo composition and color of #13. Bikes as stores and other businesses. But where, oh where, are the women riders? In Tokyo I noticed that many of the riders are older women.

Hi Norma! I am not really sure why we don’t have any photos of women on bikes. I know we saw a lot of female bikers in Japan, China, and Vietnam. We will try to get you some Girl Power pictures on our next trip. 😉

I love the first picture. The turquoise and the rust seem to fit very well together. A gorgeous collection of pictures.

Thanks Mary! Turquoise, rust, and red seem to be a consistent theme through our travels. I guess it is a favorite of ours.

    Fantastic pictures as always

I love photos of bikes – they always feel very retro 🙂 I would love to be able to use a bike to get around – unfortunately despite the fact I was totally BMX bandit when I was a kid, these days…not so much!!

Great photos; thanks for sharing. The Tour D’Afrique Foundation organizes bike trips and donates bikes to the communities that they pass through. My brother did their Cairo to Capetown trip and said it was an amazing experience.
